1 and the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros.

I'm wondering if I might have a similar long-term response to TotK as my responses to other direct sequels to games where the original was such a profound experience to me, like Tales of Symphonia 1 and 2, Baten Kaitos 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X and X-2, or even Super Mario Bros. But I bet doing that in a way that doesn't discourage and frustrate a bunch of people would be extremely difficult, so maybe that's why they didn't do it. I just don't think in that "what happens if I do this?" sort of way, and I wish the game pushed you more in that direction. Someone earlier in this thread was talking about attaching all sorts of things to your shield to do some cool-sounding things, and I chuckled because I bet I attached less than five things to my shields over the course of the game. I honestly don't know what I would change about this game to make it better, other than to maybe figure out a way to create shrines that direct people toward some of the more creative things you can do with the tools that are available. Just give me a giant open wold that I can explore at my leisure and find all sorts of things all over the place. Goddamn, Nintendo has my number for creating a game I can't stop playing. Breath of the Wild might rank amongst my favorite games ever, and Tears of the Kingdom is a better Breath of the Wild, but it doesn't feel new and weird and cool in the same way Breath of the Wild did.īut I don't want to sound like I'm down on the game. That's not a slight against the game, but it's a me thing where I appreciate something new (whether it's actually new or my first introduction to it) more than iterations on that thing. I thought it was absolutely incredible, but I don't think I'll be thinking back on this as fondly in five years as I will Breath of the Wild.

All I've wanted to do since release is play this game. I didn't want to stop playing it, but I sort of wanted my life back. Finally decided to finish the game yesterday, after having played it for 160 hours or something.
